Race row football ace wins legal fight

A FOOTBALLER who sued after he was racially abused by a fan was then victimised by his club, a judge has ruled.

Rico Quitongo, 25, has won an appeal case amid his longrunning legal fight against Airdrieonians FC.

The full-back who has a Scottish mum and Angolan dad - took the club to an employment tribunal over how bosses handled his 2021 complaint that he was racially abused by an Airdrie fan during a match.

In November 2022, a panel in Glasgow dismissed his claims of race harassment and victimisation, relating to the club's handling of the complaint.

Now, Lord Douglas Fairley has ruled the employment tribunal made mistakes in its judgment.

Quitongo was in fact "victimised" by Airdrie after he complained about the racist fan and must receive compensation, the judge at the the Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) in Edinburgh ruled.

Quitongo played for Scottish Championship side Airdrie between 2021 and 2022.
