Sou much has changed in 37 years..but not for the better

A WALL of noise.

That’s what met Dynamo Kyiv the last time they were in Glasgow to face Rangers.

Even now, almost 40 years on, the Ibrox punters who were there can probably still hear it ringing in their ears.

It was deafening. And widely regarded as one of – if not THE – greatest atmosphere ever felt inside that stadium.

For fans of a certain vintage, it will never be beaten.

The new generation will cite the victory over RB Leipzig en route to the Europa League Final two years ago.

Or the 1999 classic win over Parma when Claudio Reyna had the place rocking.

But no. For many, when asked about the loudest roar they’ve ever heard watching Rangers – they’ll say September 30, 1987 and Dynamo Kyiv.

Incredibly, there were only 44,500 in the ground that night.

But the visitors couldn’t hear themselves think in an electric European Cup second-leg tie.

That’s where the crowd played their part. Against all the odds Rangers edged them out, winning 2-1 on aggregate.

So when they turned up in Glasgow’s south side again last night, it was impossible not to compare.

Alexei Mykhaylychenko – who played for both clubs – was in the main stand here.

But things have changed, that’s for sure.

For a start, Rangers aren’t even at Ibrox, of course.
