Aberg stays disciplined to put himself in Major mix for victory

RYDER CUP hero Ludvig Aberg is firmly in contention to win a maiden Major after a starting the US Open with a four-under 66.

Before April's Masters, Aberg had never teed up in a Major despite representing Europe in the mammoth Rome win over the USA last September.

But he secured a tie for second on his debut at Augusta, boldly establishing his presence among the game's best on the biggest stage.

The Swede has experienced a remarkable ascent in the sport, sitting at No.6 in the world rankings, and lived up to the billing at Pinehurst No.2.

Aberg posted three birdies and a bogey either side of the turn to sit behind early clubhouse leader Patrick Cantlay, one ahead after a 65. And the secret to his success through the opening round? Discipline.
