THOUSANDS of homes were still without power last night as motorists and rail passengers faced continued disruption after Storm Gerrit battered the country.

Engineers were working to restore power to about 7700 customers as of 11am yesterday, though Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution warned some could be without a supply today.

High winds, heavy rain and snow damaged electricity networks in some parts of the country, after a Met Office yellow weather warning was in force across much of Scotland.

SSEN said its staff was working to reconnect customers faced winds of 80mph in some coastal areas.

Some drivers were trapped for hours on the A9, which was closed at Drumochter in Inverness-shire due to snow.
