MANCHESTER UNITED’S relationship with leading strikers hasn’t been one to be proud of in recent times.
The signings of Romelu Lukaku, Edinson Cavani and Radamel Falcao all ended in tears, quite literally in respect of the latter.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic was a success for a while but, like Cavani, Falcao and Odion Ighalo, was past his best and nothing more than a short-term solution at the time.
And don’t get me started on Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese superstar’s return to Old Trafford turned into a complete disaster for both parties, making him the latest in a long line of mistakes when it comes to United’s decision making up front.
In fact, with the exception of Lukaku, the last time United signed a top-level forward in his prime was when Robin van Persie was lured from Arsenal in a £24million deal in 2012.
