PRESIDENT Joe Biden today said that "justice has been delivered" as he announced that the leader of al Qaeda had been killed in a US drone strike in Afghanistan.
The operation, thought to have been led by the CIA, saw Ayman al-Zawahiri, 71, hit by two R9X blade-fitted Hellfire "Ninja" missiles as he came out on the balcony of his safe house in central Kabul.
Al-Zawahiri helped co-ordinate the 9/11 attacks on America that killed nearly 3,000 people. The strike is the biggest blow to the militant group since its founder, Osama bin Laden, was killed in Pakistan on May 2, 2011, in an operation carried out by US Navy Seals after a near decade-long hunt. Bin Laden's fanatical deputy was the mastermind behind multiple attacks over the last two decades that left thousands of Americans dead.
He was a key figure in the bombing of the USS Cole in 2000 and deadly hits on US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.
The Egyptian-born surgeon had a £20.5 million bounty on his head. In a White House address, President Biden said: "Now justice has been delivered, and this terrorist leader is no more. No matter how long it takes, no matter where you hide, if you are a threat to our people, the United States will find you and take you out."
