The Wikileaks founder was expected to be met by his family shortly after landing in Canberra to begin enjoying his freedom and a new life together.

Earlier his wife Stella tweeted "I can't stop crying" after seeing pictures of her husband walking out of a court in Saipan, an Americancontrolled territory in the Northern Mariana islands, where a judge signed off a plea bargain deal that paved the way for his release from London's Belmarsh prison on Monday.

Under the terms of the deal, Assange, 52, admitted a charge under the US Espionage Act of conspiring with the former US Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning to obtain and disclose secret national defence documents, creating a "grave and imminent risk to human life".
