Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves was forced to deny that pensioners would lose out from a Labour government, and stressed that there would be no emergency budget immediately after the July 4 election. She said the Office for Budget Responsibility would be given 10 weeks to run the rule over her plans, after the chaos of the short-lived Liz Truss administration.
Ms Reeves was on the backfoot after Sir Keir said yesterday on an LBC phone-in that "working people" would be shielded from tax hikes but for the first time defined them as people who "don't really have the ability to write a cheque when they get into trouble".
