EMERGENCY legislation to try to revive Rishi Sunak’s unlawful Rwanda plan could be rushed through Parliament within “just a few days,” James Cleverly said today.
The new Home Secretary stated that the process to get approval for the new law could be a “very speedy one” despite warnings from senior judges that it could lead to a constitutional showdown. As the Government scrambled to get its Rwanda policy back on track, Mr Cleverly told Times Radio: “The whole process won’t necessarily be all done and dusted just in a few days but the actual parliamentary process can be that quick.”
Britain’s five most senior justices unanimously ruled yesterday that the Rwanda plans were unlawful because there was a risk that genuine asylum seekers could be forced back to their country of origin by Kigali, and possibly face torture, persecution and even a risk to their life.
