MARCUS RASHFORD was today hailed for his emotional World Cup tribute to a friend who had died of cancer just two days before.
The England star, 25, dropped to his knees and pointed to the sky after scoring the first of his two goals in the Three Lions' 3-0 win over Wales last night.
Afterwards he explained that the celebration was in memory of his close friend Garfield Hayward.
Man-of-the-match Rashford said: "Unfortunately I lost one of my friends a couple of days ago.
"He's had quite a long battle with cancer, so I'm pleased I managed to score for him.
"He's always been a big supporter of mine. He was just a great person and I'm pleased he came into my life, really." Tributes have been paid to Mr Hayward, 35, of Levenshulme, Manchester, who was known as "Garf." A shrine of candles and flowers have appeared in his home city and his nickname was last night beamed onto the wall of a Dubai nightclub.
He had previously been pictured with Rashford and mixed martial arts star Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Friends of Mr Hayward today thanked Rashford for his on-field tribute, saying it was typical of the Manchester United star to remember his friend even though he was playing a starring role at the World Cup.
