Despite acknowledging the withdrawal of his troops from the city in the Donbas, Mr Zelensky remained defiant as he used his nightly address to say his troops would "return" using modern weapons supplied by Western allies.
The city, and neighbouring Severodonetsk, have been at the centre of fierce fighting in the last few weeks as Russia seeks to gain control of Luhansk - one of two Donbas regions ich are the focal point of an attritional war in the east of Ukraine.
Today the regional governor of Luhansk and British military chiefs warned Mr Putin's forces will now switch their focus to Donetsk as they seek to claim a decisive victory for the Kremlin.
But Mr Zelensky said: "If the commanders of our army withdraw people from certain points at the front, where the enemy has the greatest advantage in firepower, and this also applies to Lysychansk, it means only one thing.
