THE leader of Hamas today raised hopes that a truce deal with Israel was near at hand that could see an exchange of hostages and prisoners.
Qatar-based Ismail Haniyeh said that his negotiators were "close to reaching a truce agreement" and had delivered a response to Qatari mediators.
There was no immediate comment from Israel, which insists on the liberation of some 240 hostages taken by Hamas last month but also the eradication of the Palestinian militant group before it will consider calling off its punishing offensive in Gaza.
