What the Bill says about dealing with piracy
THE BILLAIMS to "address the issue of unauthorised recording and exhibition of films and curb the menace of film piracy by transmission of unauthorised copies on the internet". Its provisions say that those indulging in unauthorised recording of films (such as in movie halls) and their exhibition will be imprisoned for three months and fined ₹3 lakh. This can be extended up to three years in jail and a fine of up to 5% of the production cost of the film or both.
The Bill also allows for blocking of websites and URLs hosting pirated content under the Information Technology (IT) Act. It also makes it clear that the aggrieved party in cases of piracy is free to invoke the provisions of the Copyright Act. The government too can order action against the intermediary under the IT Act 2000.
