PRICES OF ESSENTIAL commodities such as rice, wheat, sugar and edible oils are expected to remain stable in the festive season and the government is not anticipating any sharp spikes in the prices, food secretary Sanjeev Chopra on Thursday said.
"We have used all tools at our command, whether trade policy such as limiting exports or imposing stock holding limits and open market sale of rice and wheat to keep prices stable," Chopra said at a briefing on food price management. we do not anticipate any rise during the coming festivities."
Since June, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has sold 2.56 million tonne (MT) of wheat from its surplus stock through its weekly eauction under open market sale scheme so far and the target is to offload 5 MT of wheat by the end of the year.
