CHANDIGARH/JAIPUR: A suspected drug smuggler from Punjab, Sunil Yadav, 30, has allegedly been killed in California in the US by a member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang to "avenge the killing of Ankit Bhadu" in 2019, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.
According to officials aware of the matter, Yadav belonged to Abohar in Fazilka district, and was shot dead in Stockton on Monday.
"Yadav fled to the US two years ago using a fake passport, and was on the target of the Bishnoi gang for the past four years," said an official.
In a social media post, Lawrence Bishnoi's aide Rohit Godara claimed that Yadav tipped the Punjab Police about Bhadu's location which led to an encounter and subsequently his death.
"To all brothers, I, Rohit Godara, and Goldy Brar, take full responsibility for the murder of Sunil Yadav, alias Goli, in California. He colluded with the Punjab Police to orchestrate the encounter of our beloved brother, Ankit Bhadu. We avenge his death," the post said.
The post also warned others against leaking information to police.
HT could not verify the authenticity of the post.
According to police records, Yadav was an accused in at least seven cases across Punjab and Rajasthan, including three drug peddling along the India-Pakistan border, a murder case and three cases related to snatching, theft and robbery.
