Gentle. Erudite. Transformational. A man of uncommon wisdom. Strong leader. Weak leader. Reluctant king. Helpless. Many monikers have been used over the last three decades to describe the life and legacy of Manmohan Singh, who died after a long ailment on Thursday night.
But the truth is that the mild-mannered economics scholar's life—both personal and professional—was emblematic of the India story in all its glorious complexity.
Born to a father who worked as a clerk and a mother who died young, Singh was representative of the post-Partition generation that yearned to leave behind the tragic communal carnage that followed Independence, and build a better future for their families. Singh chose education as his vehicle of mobility, worked hard and took the conventional way up the socioeconomic ladder.
