Residents Hope for Relief at NGT Hearing on January 8
Hindustan Times Ranchi|January 07, 2025
The towering garbage dump at the Marine Drive site in Mango, which has grown into a hillock and become a major nuisance for nearby residents, has sparked widespread anticipation for relief as the Kolkata bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) prepares to hear the matter on January 8.

JAMSHEDPUR: The hearing pertains to the tribunal's earlier order to clear the massive waste pile, which continues to threaten public health and the environment, people familiar with the situation said on Monday.

The NGT had originally ordered the East Singhbhum district deputy commissioner (DC) and the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) to remove the mounting garbage dump from the Marine Drive dumping site on April 5, 2023, following a petition by senior citizen KS Upadhyay from the Sonari locality.

The dump, now resembling a hillock, still contains about 6,000 metric tonnes (MT) of garbage stacked at the site. It originally contained 50,000 MT of garbage dumped less than 100 meters away from the Subarnarekha River and less than 200 meters away from residential areas in Sonari.

On December 11, 2024, NGT again ordered the DC and JSPCB, to immediately douse the fire in the garbage dump at Marine Drive and remove it completely from the site in Sonari. This order followed Jamshedpur (West) MLA Saryu Roy drawing the NGT's attention to the administration's failure to remove the garbage dump and the frequent fires there.
