Chavan's exit triggered speculation that several of his loyalists might also leave the party. At the time of going to print, names of 13 MLAs were doing rounds. However, only Amarnath Rajurkar, former MLC (member of legislative council) had resigned. "I worked earnestly as long as I was in the party.... I don't want to speak about internal matters of the party as it is not in my nature. I have no complaints against anyone," Chavan said, refusing to make any comments against his old party and its leadership. He also said he would decide about his future political course in a couple of days.
The Congress blamed the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). "We all know why people left the party. The BJP has no courage to face the people in elections, and thus it is breaking opposition parties and trying to be in power," former CM Prithviraj Chavan said.
