On Thursday night, a crowd breached the security perimeter and entered the compound housing offices of Superintendent of police (SP) Shivanand Surve and deputy commissioner Dharun Kumar in the tribal-dominated region after a head constable from the Kuki community was suspended over a video of him with "armed village volunteers". HT has seen a copy of the suspension order issued by Surve that cited "grave misconduct" by a member of a "disciplined police force".
People aware of the matter said the mob set fire to buildings, including the residence of the DC, and burnt vehicles of the security forces parked near the mini-secretariat. "Two people have died of gunshot wounds. There are over a dozen injured," an official at the Churachandpur District Hospital said, requesting anonymity.
