CATHERINE Murphy and Roisin Shortall yesterday stepped down as the co-leaders of the Social Democrats.
The TDs were founding members of the party and have jointly held the reins of power since 2015.
There will be a party meeting this evening to decide on the process to elect a new leader, but it is expected a new party chief will be in place inside a fortnight.
None of the party’s other four TDs have confirmed if they will throw their hats in the ring.
Early frontrunners last night included Cork Deputy Holly Cairns and her Wicklow colleague Jennifer Whitmore.
