BOXING always has a habit of shooting itself in the foot and boy it has done it again!
Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk's battle for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world should have been the sport's biggest event of the year.
The best against the best. One person was crowned the true champ.
Now, it is all in tatters. And boxing fans are the real losers.
By all accounts, the fight was done - until they started talking about the rematch.
It is understood Fury was taking a 70/30 split from the fight, but Usyk wanted a 70/30 in the rematch if he won the first fight as he would then hold all the belts.
Now the fight is off!
Just make the fight. Then, if it is good enough, sort out the rematch afterward.
When George Foreman fought Muhammad Ali there was no rematch clause! I sometimes wish they just got rid of rematch clauses altogether. Just make the fights.
I understand why they are there, but sorting out those details often holds up the first fight and in this case has caused it to collapse.
Rematch clauses can also hold up other fighters. Once upon a time, if you lost a title fight, you had to earn your second shot at the title while the next in line got a shot.
It is so sad. We could have a Brit crowned the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
