Maguire looked in some discomfort when holding his groin near the end of the first half against Bayern Munich and although he briefly attempted to continue, he was replaced by Jonny Evans a few minutes later.
Shaw has only just returned to full fitness after missing over two months with a muscle injury and it was a shame to see him look to the bench and hold his hamstring in the same game.
Shaw didn't emerge for the second half and he was substituted for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, which shouldn't have surprised anyone because the defender was making his sixth start in 17 days after a lay-off.
The load for players returning from muscle injuries needs to be carefully handled, but Shaw has started each game since becoming available again and the club haven't really eased him back in.
