'Struggling' carer was twice over the limit in fatal crash

A CARER who discharged himself from a hospital where he was being treated for alcohol withdrawal was twice the drink-drive limit when he crashed and flipped his car on the M60, an inquest heard.

Anthony Lee Pilling, 37, suffered catastrophic injuries after his Skoda smashed into the rear of another car and ended up on its roof. He died the next day in hospital.

Mr Pilling, from Gorton, who worked at Oakfield Croft care home in Sale, had just discharged himself from Manchester Royal Infirmary where he was receiving treatment when the crash happened at 5.41am on December 30, 2023.

Toxicological analysis showed he had 166mg of alcohol per 100mls of blood in his body when the limit for driving is 80mg, Stockport Coroners' Court was told yesterday. The driver of the other car was unharmed.
