THERE'S been such a burst of growth this month and everywhere is green and teeming with life.
It's a busy time for gardening and there's a need to try to tame some of this growth, particularly weeds that are competing with everything else. One of the best ways to manage them is to have good ground-cover plants that are tough enough to elbow out the competition or have big leaves such as hostas which cover large areas and deprive weed seedlings of light.
One of the largest hostas is 'Empress Wu' which has massive heart-shaped leaves. The green leaves have deep veins making it a striking plant, and it can clump to well over a metre in spread.
