TRIALS are taking place to see if bikes could be allowed on trams.
Yesterday, former Paralympic gold medallist and now Greater Manchester's active travel commissioner, Dame Sarah Storey, joined fellow cyclist and campaigner Kathy England on a tram from Deansgate to Castlefield as part of the test runs.
Kathy, from Stockport, is one of 60 volunteers taking part in a trial to determine whether it's safe and practicable for bicycles to be taken onto Metrolink. Dame Sarah is along for the ride and to see the experience for herself.
Their journeys and more importantly, the interactions of their bikes with others on board, are observed by a team of researchers brought in as part of the pilot. They speak to passengers, asking questions to gauge their opinions and secure feedback via a survey.
