SC grants bail to activist Gautam Navlakha in Elgar case

In the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, activist Gautam Navlakha was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The court noted that the trial would take a considerable amount of time to conclude.

Justices M M Sundresh and SV N Bhatti, who formed the bench, declined to prolong the stay that the Bombay High Court had imposed on Navlakha's bail. Navlakha was also instructed to contribute Rs 20 lakh towards security expenses during his house arrest.

The bench stated that there was no necessity to extend the interim stay order, considering that Navlakha had been in detention for over four years and charges were yet to be framed. They noted that the trial would take a significant amount of time to complete and hence, they were not inclined to extend the stay.
