THE tide of refugees from Ukraine is turning. Since the war began, 12 million people have fled their homes, with an estimated five million leaving for neighbouring countries.

Most were women and children, because men over 18 were barred from leaving.

One of those refugees is Maryanna, who fled to Gdansk in Poland with her daughter Anna-Mariya when war broke out.

They walked 40 miles with thousands of refugees to the Polish border.

“It was hell but I had no choice. There were no buses to take, no cars. Everybody was in panic,” she said.

But times are changing. According to the State Border Guard Service “up to 32,000 Ukrainians are coming back daily”.
