In the first six months of the ongoing sugar marketing season from October to March, sugar mills have disbursed an impressive Rs 78,000 crore to sugarcane farmers, according to a statement by a food ministry official on Wednesday. The official further revealed that this amount accounts for 87 percent of the total cane payment of Rs 90,000 crore scheduled until March 31 for the 2023-24 season.
With the season still underway, mills have managed to clear a significant portion of their financial obligations to farmers, having produced over 300 lakh tonnes of sugar thus far. The payments made by mills are based on the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of Rs 315 per quintal, a rate fixed by the Centre for the current marketing season, taking into account the recovery rate.
