SUPREME COURT ASKS MBBS: JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE RICH AND WENT T0 PRIVATE MEDICAL COLLEGE, CAN SEEK EXEMPTION FROM RURAL SERVICE?

T he Supreme Court in the case Ashish Redu vs. Government Of Karnataka observed and has issued the notice in a writ petition filed challenging a notification issued by the Karnataka Government that required the medical students to fulfill one year of compulsory public rural service in order to be eligible for permanent registration with the Karnataka Medical Council.

The bench comprising Justice P.S. Narasimha and Justice Sanjay Karol was hearing the present matter.

The bench headed by Justice P.S. Narasimha in the case expressed his doubts, saying that just because a student studies in a private college, they would not exempt the person from working in rural areas.

The court stated that, what is wrong? Private, institution people have no obligation of nation building? Just because you go and study in private hospital, private law college, you have an exemption from working in rural areas? What is this which gives you an exemption just because you studied in private medical college that you cannot work in rural areas? The counsel appearing for the petitioner submitted before the court that there were bandwidth and language issues.

The bench headed by Justice Narasimha replied So what? It is a beautiful thing that you sal go somewhere else and work. You walk up and down India and work in different rural areas. That is such a beautiful thing to do.
