Eight suffer serious 80% burn injuries, 21 persons in intensive care units, seven on ventilator support and one critically ill

Over 150 people were injured; eight seriously with over 80 percent burns, in a massive fire at the Theyyam ritual at the Anjuambalam Veerarkav Temple festival near Neeleswaram in Kasargod district, early morning on Tuesday. As per the latest official update, of the total 21 people admitted to the intensive care units, seven are under ventilator support, and one person is critically ill. The injured were rushed to various hospitals in Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode and Mangaluru in neighbouring Karnataka.

Sources said a spark from a cracker burst close by could have fallen into a shed that had stored heaps of low intensity firecrackers leading to an explosion. The walls and the roof of the shed were broken as a result of the explosion. A witness recounted the presence of a huge crowd near the shed where the crackers were stored. "It was really difficult for them to run away to safety when the explosion happened," he said.
