Akal Takht penance for Sukhbir Badal

The Akal Takht, the supreme Sikh temporal body, has sentenced former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal to undergo penance by undertaking cleansing chores in the kitchen and toilets of several gurdwaras, including the Golden Temple.

The punishment has been meted out to Badal, the president of the Shiromani Akali Dal, and other former Akali ministers, for their controversial decisions during the party's rule from 2007 to 2017. One such decision involved favouring Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in the 2015 case of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib.
