Flamingos at wetlands near NMIA in safe path: BNHS study

Migratory birds such as flamingos flying between the Thane creek bird sanctuary and Navi Mumbai wetlands maintain an altitude below the aircraft flight path, a recent study by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) has revealed.

The report forms a part of the half-yearly compliance report of environmental and coastal regulation zone (CRZ) clearance for the ongoing project for the establishment of greenfield Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).

Earlier, there had been concerns over some of the bird sites such as NRI colony, Training Ship Chanakya and Delhi Public School (DPS) located close to the upcoming airport as they come within Inner Horizontal Surfaces (IHS) of the project. The Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited has pledged commitment to protecting the biodiversity around the airport area along with the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).
