Stung by strong criticism from the Shiv Sena (UBT), the BJP on Saturday got the Central Railway administration to put on hold its proposal to demolish the allegedly unauthorised Hanuman temple near the entrance of Dadar station.
The temple is 80 years old and thousands of commuters and others pray there daily. The BJP was put on the backfoot by Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray. Afraid that its pro-Hindutva image will suffer majorly especially in the run up to the BMC election if the demolition was carried out, the BJP quickly got its act together and told the railway administration not to proceed with the plan for demolition.
The action was initially prompted by a notice issued by the Assistant Divisional Engineer (Works), Byculla, Central Railway, on December 4, 2024. It granted a seven-day time-frame for the temple's trustee or poojari to address the issue, citing concerns about safety and operational disruptions caused by the encroachment.
