NEW VISTAS - India hopes to leverage its ties with Trump to meet its goal as manufacturing hub

India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has called former U.S. President Donald Trump's return to office "an opportunity" for India, with potential benefits spanning supply chain realignments, immigration policies, and new avenues for sustainable development. Speaking to CEOs, members of the diaspora, and MPs in Sydney, Jaishankar outlined a pragmatic view on how India could leverage Trump's policies to deepen its role in global trade and diplomacy.

During his address, Jaishankar identified five main areas where Trump's win could influence India's foreign policy, underscoring supply chain restructuring as a critical factor.

"There was already a reordering of supply chains, and this will accelerate," Jaishankar said. The minister argued that India had "missed the manufacturing bus" in past decades but now has a second chance to establish itself as a global manufacturing hub. With over 1,800 global capability centres in India generating about $150 billion in exports, Jaishankar emphasized that India is now positioned to become a preferred location for businesses seeking a more resilient and diversified supply base.
