MP gets stick for dubbing Sengol a “Raja ka Danda”

Samajwadi Party MP R.K. Chaudhary ignited a war of words between INDIA bloc leaders and those from the BJP after he described the Sengol, which is a symbol of the transition from Britain to India after Independence, as a "Raja ka Danda" and demanded that it be replaced in Parliament with a copy of the Constitution.

In a letter to Speaker Om Birla, Chaudhary has written that "Sengol means 'Raj Dand'. It also means 'Raja ka Danda'. After ending the princely order, the country became independent. Will the country be run by 'Raja ka danda' or the Constitution? I demand that Sengol be removed from Parliament to save the Constitution." The MP from Mohan lalganj in Uttar Pradesh told ANI that "the adoption of the Constitution marked the beginning of democracy in the country, and the Constitution is its symbol. The BJP government in its last term installed a 'sengol' next to the Speaker's chair. Sengol is a Tamil word that means scepter. Raj Dand also means the king's stick."
