Only CJI can decide what cases to hear

Justice DY Chandrachud on Tuesday said it is for the chief justice of India to decide what cases the Supreme Court to hear, and not political parties.

The former chief justice was responding to criticism from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut that he had removed the fear of law from politicians in Maharashtra by not deciding on petitions over the disqualification of MLAs. This kept the doors open for political defections and subsequently led to the defeat of the Maha Vikas Aghadi in the assembly election, Raut said.
