Temple trust opposes parking tower project

The BMC's ambitious project to build a multi-level robotic parking tower near Mumbadevi Temple to ease congestion in the area, has landed into a controversy. The temple's trust has raised strong objections against the 15-storeyed tower behind the temple in Kalbadevi, citing safety and security of the devotees.

A source from the temple trust said, "We are not against beautification and enhanced facilities for people, but a high-rise will not only hide the temple but also be a safety hazard for devotees in case of a disaster."

Over 10,000 devotees daily visit the historic temple that was built more than 200 years ago. On holidays, the number climbs to around 25,000 and up to a lakh on festivals like Diwali. The 3,223 sq mt tower, costing Rs122.61 crore, will accommodate 546 vehicles.
