The row concerns a report by the privileges committee which accused seven Tory MPs and three peers of launching an "unprecedented and coordinated" campaign to influence its findings about Johnson.
Among those criticised was the Foreign Office minister Zac Goldsmith, to whom Johnson gave a peerage. There were calls from opposition parties and some Tories for Lord Goldsmith to lose his job.
Several former cabinet ministers, including Nadine Dorries, Jacob Rees-Mogg, and Priti Patel, were also named in the report, which said their behaviour threatened to wreck confidence in the process for investigating contempt of parliament allegations.
Others whom the committee said had called its inquiry a witchhunt and politically motivated were the former frontbenchers Brendan Clarke-Smith, Mark Jenkinson, Andrea Jenkyns and Michael Fabricant. Two other Tory peers, Peter Cruddas and Stephen Greenhalgh, were singled out for being among 600 people who emailed members of the committee using a template devised by the Conservative Post website.
The email message invited people to lobby the four Tory members, urging them to "step down" from the committee and send a "strong message that we will not tolerate politically motivated attacks against our party".
