The commitment, made over the weekend as Musk handed a lottery-style check to the first winner of his contest at a town hall event, could mean the billionaire is on the hook for $17m if he remains the sole donor to his own political action committee, called America Pac.
The petition is for any registered voter in Pennsylvania. Attenders of Saturday's town hall event had to sign the petition, which allows America Pac to garner contact details for more potential voters that it can work to get to the polls for Donald Trump.
The petition does not require signers to be a Republican: any Democrat registered to vote in Pennsylvania could sign it too.
