The new baccalaureate-style qualification, announced by Sunak in his speech to the Conservative party conference in Manchester, would also kill off the T-level vocational qualification launched just three years ago.
Sunak told members: "We will introduce the new rigorous, knowledge-rich, Advanced British Standard which will bring together A-levels and T-levels into a new single qualification for our school leavers." The proposals would increase the number of classroom hours by 15% for most sixth formers, adding about an hour a day, while requiring students to study "some form of English and maths" until the age of 18.
Rather than three A-levels or a single T-level course, students would be able to study five subjects, including "major" and "minor" subjects from both technical and academic options.
Details of how the new qualification would work are sparse. The Department for Education (DfE) said a consultation document would be issued this autumn, followed by a white paper published next year.
