Prosecutors at Spain's top criminal court have launched a preliminary investigation into whether Luis Rubiales's unsolicited kiss of the footballer Jenni Hermoso could constitute sexual assault. Their move came as the embattled football chief's mother said she had shut herself in a church and was on a hunger strike over what she described as the "inhumane and bloodthirsty" hunt of her son.
Yesterday, more than a week after the head of Spain's football federation grabbed Hermoso by the head and planted a kiss on her lips, prosecutors said they were looking into the incident amid concerns that there may be grounds for sexual assault charges.
The court's decision was made in light of the "unequivocal nature" of Hermoso's statements, it said in a statement seen by AFP. "Given the public statements made by Jennifer Hermoso, the sexual act she was subjected to by Rubiales was not consensual." As part of the legal challenge, Hermoso would be offered a chance to file a formal complaint within 15 days, the court added.
