Argyle fan fined for sending offensive message

A PLYMOUTH Argyle fan who sent an “insulting and distressing” tweet about an arsonist who killed six children, has been handed a hefty fine and warned he’ll be jailed if he fails to pay it.

Gary Miller, aged 33, from Grenville Road, Plymouth, appeared at Plymouth Crown Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to an amended charge of sending an indecent or grossly offensive electronic communication – a tweet – which intended to caused distress or anxiety.

The court heard from prosecutor Herc Ashworth, who explained how on March 7 this year, Plymouth Argyle played Derby County in front of a crowd of 16,500. Plymouth Argyle won the match 2-1 with the winning goal being scored by Ryan Hardie.

The court heard that a coachload of Derby supporters were travelling home from the Home Park fixture and one supporter was scrolling through tweets about the game. She fell upon a tweet on an account police were later able to confirm was being maintained by Miller.
