It was bought by David Copland, a North Yorkshire-based dealer and collector of items of historic interest, at an auction but was in a bad state of repair.
The same trophy was also lifted by Wycombe Wanderers and Chesterfield in the two seasons prior to Argyle’s 1-0 victory over Darlington, when the Football League was sponsored by insurance company Endsleigh for a three-year period.
Ironically, Copland is a Darlington supporter, although he could not attend the game at Wembley in May 1996 when Neil Warnock’s Pilgrims clinched promotion with a 1-0 win after a goal from Ronnie Mauge.
The silver trophy, which was specially commissioned by Endsleigh, weighs in at 1.7 kilogrammes, although the lid, which featured an owl, and the plinth are missing.
Copland has had it restored by one of the country’s top silversmiths in Sheffield and is now as good as new. The trophy is currently listed on eBay at £75,000, or best offer, but Copland hopes one of Argyle, Wycombe or Chesterfield will consider buying it for their trophy cabinet.
