Celebrations at last for Covid students

HUNDREDS of Plymouth students are celebrating their A-level results, with some preparing to study at universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

A number of Plymouth schools saw great achievements, including Sir John Hunt where teachers said they were “extremely proud” of its sixth-form pupils.

Head of sixth form, Mr Sharpe, said every single student secured their first choice for university, with 70% of those results being A*-C grades. He said: “At Sir John Hunt Sixth Form, we focus on helping students unlock their potential and discover their futures and this is where all our hard work pays off.

“Students leaving us this year will be going on to more ambitious destinations than ever in areas such as Psychology, Law, Maths and Teaching. We owe a huge thanks to the wider community of parents, carers, teachers and support staff for encouraging and supporting our students in achieving these fantastic results.”

Alan Yendell, Headteacher of Plymstock School, said he was “incredibly proud of every single student” who received their results, adding this group of students were heavily impacted by Covid – and some were going on to study at Oxford.

He said: “We have to remember that this year’s cohort would have been GCSE students back in Year 10, preparing for the onset of GCSEs and all that entails, including vital exam-hall experience. However, this of course never happened due to the pandemic – instead, they experienced three years of unprecedented disruption to their lives.”

A-level students at Devonport High School for Girls also celebrated fantastic results this year. 67% of all grades achieved were A*, A, or B. It was impressive to see 21 students awarded A/A* grades across the board.
