THE number of incidents of cruelty towards dogs has risen in Cornwall in the last year, new figures have shown.
According to the RSPCA, they may be man's best friend, but cruelty towards dogs increased by 6% in the county in the last 12 months. In 2022, there were 499 reports made to the RSPCA in the area about cruelty to dogs, compared with 470 in 2021.
The charity said its report made for grim reading, with intentional harm, neglect and abandonments among the main causes for the increase.
The type of incidents which come under intentional harm are attempted killing, poisoning, beating, improper killing, mutilation and suspicious circumstances. Shockingly, there were 98 reports of intentional harm to dogs in Cornwall.
Nationally, the number of reports made to the RSPCA about dogs including intentional harm, neglect and abandonments in 2022 was 42,690, a 7% increase from 2021 (39,797).
