A NEW innovative system of heat networks could soon be benefiting a large number of businesses and homes in Plymouth.
The city is one of the few in the UK involved in the Government's Heat Network Zoning Pilot, with the council currently planning the first phase of this system.
Heat networks, or district heating, distribute heat from a central source to consumers through a network of underground pipes carrying hot water. This means that instead of each building using individual gas boilers or electric heaters, a citywide central heating system is created. Waste heat from processes such as manufacturing and data centres is the cheapest source of heat and provides a more efficient and lower carbon heating solution.
