Ken Jones, Devonshire’s most senior player, asserted his dominance playing some superb tennis throughout the night. Tavistock took the win 58-35.
In Division 1, Devonshire A played Tavistock A and proved too strong and took all four events.
However, Tavistock fought well in two of the matches and they went to Championship tie-breaks only for Devonshire to win them both and the match 67-32.
A rearranged match saw Mannamead A, in need of victory to keep pace at the top, beat league leaders Devonshire A 50-36.
The respective first pairs played first, with Lyndon Hardisty and Will Heard of Devonshire racing to win the first set 6-2. Dan Chadder and Matt Bowers of Mannamead fought back in the second, taking it 6-1.
That momentum was carried into the championship tie-break, but some solid play in tricky conditions - and a couple of double faults at crucial points - helped set up two match points for Devonshire, the second of which was taken from a wicked kick serve from Will.
In the adjacent match, Marty Page and George Welbourne of Devonshire faced Tom Pantling and Chris Welland of Mannamead, who comfortably won the first set, but the second was closely contested with Mannamead ultimately prevailing to win 6-4.
With the two teams tied at 1-1, the next round of matches played out in a similar pattern, with Devonshire’s first pair taking the first set against Mannamead’s second pair 6-0, only for Tom and Chris to show their fighting spirit to win the second and set up another championship tiebreak.
Lyndon and Will once again found a way to win and Dan and Matt outplayed Marty and George in the final match of the night to win 6-1, 6-1.
Division 2 saw a strong Newton and Noss A play Hill Lane B and come out winners 70-12.
Plympton A were beaten 54-45 by St Budeaux B in a very close match. St Budeaux’s Gary Symons and Rich Mitchell won both of their events.
