THE former Finla Coffee shop owners have been able to pay off a huge fine imposed on them for breaching Covid regulations – by getting supporters to pay for it.
In 2021 the firm, along with owners Michael Pendlebury and Deanna Yeates were taken to court by Plymouth City Council. They were found guilty at a trial at Exeter Magistrates Court, which they did not attend, of breaching coronavirus regulations by opening the cafe in St Stephens Place, Plympton on November 6 and 7, 2020.
The breach was “contrary to regulations 15(1) and 20(1)(a) and (2) of the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) (No 4) Regulations 2020” which other cafes in Plympton – and across the country – were also forced to abide by. Deputy District Judge Hine who presided over the trial, continued it in their absence adding that the defendants had been “cavalier and disrespectful” in not turning up for the hearing.
Prosecutor Nick Lewin, on behalf of the council, said the firm had “flagrantly disregarded” the regulations despite the council receiving numerous complaints from people saying Finla Coffee was serving food and drinks.
