A DELAY to regeneration work on Plymouth’s high streets means hoarding will remain in place over Christmas but the Civic Square is opening up this week.

Hoardings to stay in place over Christmas

Fencing is coming down to reveal new planting, refurbishment of the pool area and reinstatement of heritage features including stone work in the bow tie pattern designed by Geoffrey Jellicoe for the Civic Square in 1943. There is new paving, seating and lighting.

City centre champion Cllr Mark Lowry (Lab Southway) said the Civic Square was “coming back to life” and would be “handed back to the people of Plymouth” this week.

The works, costing £3million, have been funded by the Transforming Cities Fund and High Street Heritage Action Zone.

Only the cycle path adjacent to the pond is yet to be finished but will be in the next few weeks, councillors were told.
