WAYNE Rooney could not resist a quip at the expense of his former Manchester United and England team-mate Gary Neville during his first Press conference as Plymouth Argyle's new head coach.
It is a return to football management for the 38-year-old after his previous job at Birmingham City came to an abrupt end at the start of January after just 15 games in charge. Birmingham won only twice while he was at St Andrews as they tumbled down the Championship table from a play-off position towards the relegation zone.
Rooney had joined Birmingham in October 2023 from DC United in the USA, and prior to his time across the Atlantic he had also managed Derby County during a very difficult financial period for the East Midlands club.
Given the fame and fortune he enjoyed from his playing career, which included becoming Manchester United's record goalscorer and playing 120 times for England, Rooney does not need to continue in football management for the money.
He has also made a success of being a TV pundit recently, just as Neville has done since his playing days for United and England, and spells as England assistant manager and head coach of Spanish side Valencia.
